Event: 4th CIOFF Asian and Oceanian Children's Folklore Festival. Venue: Municipality of Pendik, Istanbul, Turkey Dates: April 18-24, 2006 Host of Kaliawan: The BILFEN SCHOOLS hosted the members of the group. Each child member was hosted by a family with a child studying in BILFEN. The staff were accommodated in a guest house of BILFEN. BILFEN hosts international festivals and one of the best series of schools in Istanbul. Repertoire: "Tarakluban: Cavorting with the Innocents", "Mindanao Sketches" and "Karahibot-a rural suite".
Kaliawan was audience favorite in the opening parade because of its very energetic dancing on the streets.
At the Haghia Eirene (a mosque turned into a theater), Kaliawan performed Karahibot and easily became the most applauded group. This event was sponsored by BILFEN with 12 countries participating.
Aside from performances, the group were given activities in BILFEN school like clay molding, music lessons, painting and drawing and movie watching. Tours of the different historical and cultural sites were also accorded to the group either by bus, by boat and horse-driven cart.
The BILFEN schools has extended its desire to invite the group again next year and has made a great impact to the people in BILFEN in terms of professionalism, respect, dance skills, and overall fine behavior and attitude.
The group also received invitation from Cyprus for another international event/performance.
Back to Manila, the group was invited by the Dance Committee of the National Committee for Culture and the Arts to perform at the International Dance Day celebration in San Fernando, Pampanga on April 29 along with the best dance groups of the Philippines.
Today they are busy performing for many different occasions and is preparing for a grand recital along with the students of the Leyte Dance Theater's Summer Dance Workshop on June 23, 2006 in Tacloban. They will also perform together with the Leyte Dance Theater during the opening of the Tacloban Astrodome slated for June 25.
